Labor Studies is searching for a 50% graduate student employee or two 25% GSRs to work with the Chair and IDP staff for Winter, Spring and partial Summer 2021 quarters or Fall 2021 to support student well-being and intellectual engagement beyond the classroom, and develop our program of internship and career experience opportunities (up to Step VI).

Labor Studies is an interdepartmental program with a major and a minor. As an interdisciplinary field of research and public engagement, Labor Studies focuses work as a central site of inequality and opportunity in modern society. Labor Studies trains students to understand the complex intersections of work with race, gender, sexuality, both historically and in the present day, preparing students for careers in nonprofit advocacy, public service and leadership in labor and community organizations.

Duties include:

• Inventory the current state of experiential learning in Labor Studies courses through survey of existing syllabi, targeted interviews with instructors & community partners
• Work with the Chair of Labor Studies to determine the extent to which student employment might fall within the scope of experiential education
• Meet with Labor Studies faculty to research and plan for Labor Studies 195CE, to launch in Fall of 2021. These specific duties would include:
  • Conduct literature review and suggest readings for the course
  • Support faculty in collecting information and resources for the course, which includes suggesting topics, learning outcomes, and guest speakers
  • Develop documentation for internship site supervisors, explaining educational purpose and work competency goals for program
  • Assist with outreach and recruitment of UCLA IRLE programs and community experiential learning sites
  • Assist with the development of a social media plan between the students enrolled in the course and our communications team
• Serve as a liaison between Labor Studies, campus programs and multiple sites off campus
• Assist with the compilation and organization of digitized course materials, historical sources, datasets, student support resources, and a library of Labor Studies syllabi to support future course planning•Assist with general student programming
